Julie Small-Gamby

I have worked over the years in sculpture, painting, collage and mixed media.   

My work in these different areas is related by a strong physical and tactile quality.   

Experimentation and discovery are key to my process.  My vision slowly emerges as I interact with my materials and is usually a surprise to me.  What compels me to create is the desire to give body to an aspect of my inner world, allowing me a glimpse of what lies within.  My work is my mirror.

 

The following poem, which I wrote in 2009, sheds some light on my process. 

 

YES - - NO - - MAYBE

 

 It’s too red

 It’s not red enough

The pinks pop out too much

 It’s too drab --- washed out.

It’s not integrated

Too much going on ---

It doesn’t work.

 Why am I painting?

What’s it all about?

 

Shhh

Keep going

Keep going.

 Ahh, It’s starting to speak!

Yes - - - No - - -  Maybe?

Ahaaaaaa

YES! - - - - That’s It !!!
